Bio:

Dr. Kaitlyn Harper is an Assistant Scientist in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has an M.A. in Urban Education from Loyola Marymount University, an M.Sc. in Population and Public Health from the University of British Columbia, and a PhD in Human Nutrition from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Kaitlyn’s research focuses on improving food security and reducing food waste in the US. She is passionate about participatory action research, in which community members are intimately involved in the formation, implementation, and evaluation of projects. She applies social justice and racial equity perspectives to her work and aims to challenge power dynamics by amplifying voices of those who are typically left out of conversations.

What are the latest and greatest happenings and resources in food recovery sector? Salvaging surplus food and redistributing it is crucial for maximizing impact and ensuring that food serves its highest purpose of feeding people. Despite this, only a small fraction of surplus food ends up being donated, often resulting in food relief agencies purchasing perishables rather than relying solely on donations. This panel will explore key components and partnerships essential for successful food recovery programs, addressing how to rescue high-quality, nutritious food and increase distribution capacity in a dignified manner.
